SONICA EKRANO is a new documentary film festival dedicated to the music, musicians, sounds and movements at the edges of massification and popularity.
Se, num panorama nacional de muitos e bons festivais de cinema, é ainda assim difícil encontrar a música como protagonista principal, o que dizer das “outras músicas”? Como chegar a filmes excepcionais que retratam artistas, sons e movimentos locais e globais que tantas vezes passam por entre os interstícios da ampla oferta audiovisual dos nossos dias? É longe dos holofotes mediáticos que tantas vezes se vai criando a história - tanto no presente como em passados que, por vezes, demoram décadas a ser (re)conhecidos.
The first edition of this festival creates a new space to provide the opportunity to watch cinematic works which remain (even in an age of digital platforms with on-demand content) hard to access, contributing to an increased audiovisual inclusiveness, striving to present a diversity of geographies and strike a balance between historical perspective and contemporary narratives.
The name SONICA EKRANO, written in Esperanto (meaning “Sound Screen” in English), seeks to reflect both music and cinema as “universal languages”, while also honouring the strong esperantist tradition in the south bank of the Tagus river, particularly in Barreiro and Baixa da Banheira (part of the Moita municipality), which will host the festival between September 9th and 18th.
Through the course of the 13 sessions, divided between the José Manuel Figueiredo Cultural Forum (9th to 12th), the Barreiro Municipal Library (13th to 16th) and the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium (17th and 18th), we’ll present an equal number of feature-length films, all of which made after 2015, almost half of them being shown in Portugal for the first time. The 19th OUT.FEST will take place on 5-7 October of this year. We return to Barreiro with the best annual meeting point to delve into the various possible worlds of Sound and to celebrate the miracles of Music, to explore the city and (re)experience community as a space of liberty.
OUT.RA is once again accepting applications from local artists to develop creative work related to Music / Sound / Sound Arts / Multimedia during 2023.
